JOB TITLE: Chief of Medicine

DEPARTMENT: Medical Affairs

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Medical Officer

EDUCATION: Accredited U.S. or Canadian Medical School or, School of Osteopathy or Valid ECFMG Certification

LICENSURE: State of Maryland

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Accredited post-graduate residency in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
  • Certified by the Americal Board of Internal Medicine, or American Board of Family Medicine
  • Minimum of three (3) years post-residency experience
  • AAHIVM & Hep C certification preferred




In addition to the duties of a provider as listed in the Addendum below, the Chief of Medicine has the following duties:
  • To devise and/or adopt clinical protocols, practice guidelines, and/or clinical standards for adult medical practice at the Center
  • To assist the Chief Medical Officer in making policy decisions in the area of adult medicine
  • To identify and present barriers and facilitators to the provision of adult medical services and to make recommendations for their correction or implementation to the Chief Medical Officer
  • To represent the Center on policy positions in Adult Medicine
  • To provide community education articles for publication or presentation, or serve as a resource for community education on adult medicine topics
  • To assist in the recruitment and recommendation for appointment of adult medicine providers including recommendations for recruitment, retention, and incentive strategies
  • To recommend adult medicine providers for clinical staff privileges based on standards established by the Center including a bi-annual provider performance appraisal
  • To help orient new adult medicine providers and support personnel assigned to Adult Medicine
  • To arrange, conduct and document regular departmental meetings
  • To utilize data in the monitoring of adult medicine performance within the Center
  • To meet with the Chairperson(s) of the Department of Medicine or Family Medicine of hospitals utilized by the Center if and when necessary
  • To work effectively with the CEO and all disciplines in the absence of the Chief Medical Officer
  • To coordinate research and clinical education activities in the Department
  • To provide leadership in ensuring adherence to the Center's Compliance programs, including, but not limited to, risk management, HIPAA, billing and coding practices, credentialing, peer review, accreditation standards, and research involving human subjects
  • To prepare for and participate in federal and other funding or regulatory agency or accreditation reviews




ADDENDUM

Duties and responsibilities of an adult medicine provider:




Summary: Provides comprehensive medical services, including physical examination, primary care, acute treatment, preventative care, STD screening (including prescribing PrEP & PEP), immunization management, medication prescribing, Lab testing, and interpretation.




Duties include, but are not limited to, the ability to:
  • Provide clinical services for patients age 18 years or older
  • Participate fully in the on-call schedule
  • Participate in health center meetings and committees regarding the Center and patient management as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer or their designee
  • Review patient files/records, including allergies, problems, medications, and immunization status
  • Elicit and record information about patient's medical history
  • Examine patients for symptoms or physical information
  • Order or execute various tests, analyses, and diagnostic images to provide information on patient's condition
  • Analyse reports and findings of tests and examinations, and diagnose condition of patient
  • Administer or prescribe treatments
  • Determine and prescribe medication, dosage, and schedule, given the patient's condition and allergies
  • Discuss any possible side effects to medication or immunization with patient
  • Prescribe vaccinations to immunize patient from communicable diseases
  • Promote health by advising patients about diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease
  • Perform surgical procedures commensurate with surgical competency
  • Refer patients to medical specialists for consultant services when necessary for the patient's well-being
  • Document the patient's visit including medical history, physical exam, diagnoses, and plan of action
  • Follow up with patient regarding progress in high-risk or emergency cases
  • Conduct physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage
  • Administer Family Planning services in compliance with Regulations/Protocols
