Job Summary:

The Dental Director will be responsible for providing clinical leadership to the dental providers (Dentist, Dental Therapist, and Dental Hygienist) learning or working at our Health Center (our Health Center). The Dental Director works with the leadership and other clinical staff to ensure quality dental services are delivered and are consistent with the organization’s goals and vision as determined by the Board of Directors.  The Dental Director will split time between administrative duties and direct patient care approximately 40/60, 50/50, or 60/40 (based upon experience and needs of candidate hired).

 

Job Responsibilities:
  • Work collaboratively with Health Center and Departmental leadership to design and implement programs and services to meet identified populations needs, our Health Center’s strategic goals, and compliance protocols. Provides timely updates on any concerns/issues regarding patient care, daily operations, etc. that need to be resolved.
    • As a team ensure dental department and provider only meetings are consistently happening to ensure transparent communication, training, team building, all staff are up to date on processes/policies as needed.
  • Direct oversight of Dentists, Dental Therapists, Dental Hygiene, and Dental provider students.
    • Work with Dental Team to ensure on-time delivery, practice efficiency and patient satisfaction meet clinical policies and protocols.
    • Ensures a plan is place for preceptor duties are assigned to self or current staff for students during their community health rotations, as applicable.
  • Work within scope of professional license to provide direct dental care to patients using established dental procedures and techniques as outlined by the ADA.
  • Assess dental condition and needs of patients.  Use patient screening procedures to include medical history review, x-rays and dental and perio charting.
  • Professional and courteously manage patients during dental procedures.
  • Inform patients of and explain dental procedures being performed.
  • Conduct dental charting and ensure patient information is entered timely and correctly into the patient’s electronic record in Dentrix.
  • Develop and implement individualized dental care plans.
  • Provide dental education to patients in a clear and easily understood manner to ensure patients understand the recommended treatment plan and include the patient in the discussion.
  • Institute emergency measures for sudden or adverse developments during treatment of patients.
  • Assist in managing the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC, and ADA standards.
  • Be cooperative, helpful, a positive role model and work within compliance of a collaborative agreement with any Advanced Dental Therapist, Dental Therapist, Outreach Staff. 
  • Maintain a level of productivity that ensures achievement of fiscal goals as set by the organization.
  • In collaboration with the CEO and CQO develop a robust Quality program in the dental department utilizing clinical expertise in setting the strategic direction of program development and continuous improvement throughout the program.
  • Serve as member of Business Leader Team and Leadership Council; represent our Health Center at CHC and community meetings as required; support community events and fundraising functions.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Qualifications:
  • Board certified, MN licensed dentist with current DEA license.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in a key leadership role with responsibility and oversight of the dental department and staff development/management. 
  • Abide by ethical standards of the licensing board.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an understanding of underserved populations.
  • Ability to solve problems effectively, creatively, and decisively in decision-making.
  • Ability to develop, lead and facilitate teams to achieve the goals of the department.
  • Confidence, professional judgment, and grace under pressure.
  • Previous experience and knowledge of the needs of a Federal Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

 

Other Requirements:



As a full-time, exempt employee and member of leadership, work outside of the typical workday and typically 40+ hours per week will be necessary on occasion to facilitate the organization’s business. Travel is required to meetings, events and to support other clinic locations within the community and across the region. Means of travel and travel expenses will be reimbursed according to our Health Center’s travel policy.   Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time.  Position requires repetitive use of fingers, hands, wrist in job-related duties, i.e. telephone, computer.  Complete range of motion, including fine motor skills and tactile sense of both hands.  Able to lift 25 pounds.
