Job Description - Dental Therapist / Dental Hygiene Therapist (ME)

POSITION SUMMARY
Provide dental therapist services according to patient’s needs ensuring the highest standards of clinical care is provided. Performs duties according to accepted practices of the dental therapy field and the Clinic policies and procedures using independent judgment in decision making. Work is reviewed for overall soundness in judgment, and all unusual problems or circumstances are discussed with the supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Registration with the Maine Board of Dentistry as a Dental Therapist
- Must hold a valid State of Maine Dental Therapist License
- Master’s degree (MA) or equivalent from a four-year college or university.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong commitment to public health dentistry.
- Will have up-to-date training and certification in Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or American Health & Safety Institute. Must obtain within 3 months if not current at hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Registered Dental Therapist Degree
- Registered with the Maine Board of Dentistry
- Experience in private practice as well as public health
- Knowledge of basic dental equipment and instructions and x-ray machines
- Knowledge of clinical sterilization practices
- Ability to create and maintain accurate records and files
- Basic computer knowledge-Dentrix preferred
- Ability to create and present oral health educational materials
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide skilled dental therapy treatment so clients receive high-level dental care. Chart complete and detailed services on all clients at the time of service so that records are kept accurately and legibly.
- Follow established policies and procedures for the dental practice to comply with the standard of care established by the Board of Dentistry.
- Take necessary radiographs as ordered by the supervising dentist. Clearly document in the patient’s chart the type (i.e., bitewing, periapical, etc.) and the number of films taken (including retakes).
- Perform periodic charting of the oral cavity, including but not limited to the chief complaint, level of patient’s oral hygiene, degree of calculus and plaque, bone loss, and existing restorations.
- Perform full-mouth periodontal probing with an evaluation of periodontium and dental charting.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and committees.
- Assist in daily management and direction of dental personnel.
- May complete dental prophylaxis including scaling and polishing and applying topical preventive or prophylactic agents, including fluoride varnishes and pit and fissure sealants. (Dual Hygiene License)
- Administration of local anesthetic, application of desensitizing medication or resin.
- Extracting deciduous teeth and class III extractions under local infiltration analgesia; undertake routine restorations in both deciduous teeth and permanent teeth on adults and children.
- Cavity preparation; placement of fillings (amalgams and resin-based composites).
- Provide dental education to patients, including individualized oral hygiene instruction for proper brushing, flossing, and nutritive counseling.
- Fill out prior authorizations, medical clearances, and referral paperwork as needed.
- Follow procedures to maintain infection control following universal and standard precautions.
- Make recommendations regarding equipment and supply needs. Help with routine maintenance of equipment.
- Perform sharpening and sterilization of instruments following infection control protocols, and maintain hygiene armamentarium.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance chores as assigned and document in log sheets.
- Interacts harmoniously and effectively with others, focusing upon the attainment of organizational goals and objectives through a commitment to teamwork.
- Conforms to acceptable attendance and punctuality standards as expressed in theÂ
- Employee Handbook.
- Complies with all safety rules and protocols. Reports all accidents, regardless of severity, immediately to supervisor and completes incident/injury report and investigation form, which will be forwarded to Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
- Abides by the organization’s compliance program and requirements.
- Current on all required training for the current year.
- Performs all other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

Originally from Flint, Michigan, Kevin served in the US Army as a Military Police officer. After being discharged as a disabled veteran, Kevin returned to Michigan and obtained a degree in Criminal Justice. He then worked in the healthcare field for 13 years in fields including; EMS, ED and Private Practice. He also taught both clinical and administrative courses at two colleges in the Portland Metropolitan Area.
