JOB DESCRIPTION




Position: Dentist         

Supervised by: Dental Director







POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dentist is responsible for the delivery of quality dental care to patients of the Center and functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team within the scope of his or her dental practice.




POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES/COMPETENCIES:

1. Provides dental services.
  • Maintains dental expertise and competency (to include age-specific competency) as well as demonstrates a thorough knowledge of procedures to deliver quality dental services
  • Examines, diagnoses treats, and/or refers patients assigned to dentist’s panel, as per individual employment agreements; prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed dental and oral health conditions, following appropriate standards of care for each patient.
  • Provides dental services, as scheduled, indirect patient care at the clinic site, including extended hours and at outreach locations, at least forty (40) hours per week in clinic, pro-rated for full-time equivalent.
  • Refers patients for appropriate specialty care services, as appropriate for patient’s management and care. Reviews all reports for patients under his/her care on a timely basis and makes appropriate dental decisions. 
  • Provides continuity of care to center patients on his or her patient panel and other patients as assigned.  
  • Maintains a problem oriented health record for each patient seen in accordance with the established Health Information Management policies and procedures and prevailing State or Federal regulations for the treatment of oral health/dental conditions. 
  • Ensures that patient and family/significant others are educated about diagnosis and the plan of care, as appropriate. Acts as a resource for facilitating communication when necessary.
  • Participates in specified health promotion, education, and/or prevention programs as needed related to dental and oral health education; attends and participates in clinic meetings / departmental meetings, community collaborative programs, and other clinic functions as required.
  • Participates in outreach activities as requested/assigned e.g. portable dental clinics at schools, homeless shelters, head-start programs, nursing homes, group homes, health fairs to reach underserved patients within our service area.




2. Provides clinical oversight under the supervision of the Dental Director
  • Assumes responsibility/accountability for delegating, directing, and supervising patient care activities. Trains, mentors and supervises students and dental clinical staff engaged in the clinical treatment of patients, as appropriate.
  • Participates in the analysis of community health problems and assists in the development of the community health care plan.
  • Participates in Compliance and Performance Improvement activities for continuous quality improvement and risk management purposes.
  • Participates in the review and development of patient care policies, including health maintenance schedules and continuity of care.
  • Participates in the review and development of protocols and standing orders.
  • Implements the plans, procedures and protocols for the dental team.
  • Serves as a resource and positive, proactive dental provider.
  • Remains current with dental and oral health trends.
  • Participates in the evaluation of products, procedures, and patient care standards.




3. Maintains professional courtesy at all times.

4. Handles with care and confidentiality sensitive and protected information maintaining a high level of professionalism and in accordance with HIPAA requirements and 42 CFR part 2.

5. Communicates effectively and professionally with both internal and external constituents.

6. Complies with federal and state law and regulation at all times.

7. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, organizational communique, in-service meetings, and professional conferences.

8. Attend and participate in meetings and in-services as required and/or assigned.

9. Maintain knowledge of established organizational policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, an environment of care, management of information, and other standards.

10. Supports the FQHC's mission by “providing exceptional health care services for all people in the region regardless of their ability to pay”.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.







Education, Training, Licensing, and Credentialing

Required:
  • Dental degree (D.D.S.) from an accredited dental school
  • Current unrestricted license from the Michigan Licensing Board to practice as a dentist
  • Annual continuing education as required
  • Must be registered and have current DEA, DPS, and other such certificates to legally operate a practitioner in the State of Michigan
  • Hospital privileges at designated area hospitals, if required
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals Certification




Experience and Skills

Required:
  • Knowledge of dental protocols in general and an ability to quickly gain specific knowledge of the current operational protocols
  • Ability to document, with clarity, all information relevant to a patient’s needs
  • Ability to effectively present information in small group situations to patients, Center staff, and the general public
  • Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones, and copiers
  • Knowledge of dental and medical terminology and appropriate abbreviations
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills




Preferred:
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practice
  • Experience working within a Federally Qualified Health Center




Physical Demands, Working Conditions, and Travel Requirements

Physical Demands:
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 40 pounds.
  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye/hand coordination. 
  • Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time. 
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. 
  • Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
  • The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
  • Must be able to verbally communicate and have the ability to hear.




Working Conditions:
  • Required to communicate with outside contacts, area media entities, public, community, physicians, patients, families, caregivers, and the health care team.
  • Travel locally, regionally, and nationally as needed
