​​(OB/GYN) Staff Physician


General Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

The OB/GYN Staff Physician works as part of the health care team performing a variety of patient-centered services including assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, implementation of treatment plans, and monitoring of follow-up for patients. OB/GYN Staff Physicians provide supervision of Physician Assistants (PA's) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMW’s) NP's. As appropriate and included in the local hospital agreement and privileging practice, the Staff OB/GYN Physician supervises and trains local hospital Physician Interns and Physician Residents.



Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Obtains complete medical history from patient, and/or family, and/or previous medical record, etc.
  2. Educates the patient and family member on the patient’s diagnoses’ and treatment options within scope of knowledge and authority.
  3. Coaches and supports the patient in self-management of their health.
  4. Teaches and counsels patients and families in a culturally sensitive manner.
  5. Consults with physicians and other members of the health care team as necessary and facilitates communication between all members of the health care team.
  6. Promotes the Team-based Care Model by participating in daily huddles and Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) to communicate and collaborate on patient issues and needs.
  7. Provides primary medical care by caring for all patients in accordance with the physician's medical specialty.
  8. Assesses, diagnoses, implements treatment, evaluates and monitors patients' health status.
  9. Performs complete physical examinations on patients.
  10. Utilizes center selected, evidence-based, care practice guidelines when managing chronic conditions and counseling patients on health care self-management.
  11. Diagnoses acute and chronic illness on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and x-ray reports and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols.
  12. Collaborates, initiates, and monitors agreed upon treatment plans with patients assigned to the OB/GYN Staff Physician, using protocols and/or consultation with a consulting physician.
  13. Refers patients requiring hospitalization or assessment and management of conditions to emergency department physicians or appropriate specialists.
  14. Provides hospital-based on-call coverage, and is expected to assist hospital staff with emergency surgeries or treatment modalities as needed or when called upon, on a non emergent patient. Incumbent is required to review, sign, and date ‘Expectations of On-Call Emergency Coverage’ addendum to his/her ‘Letter of Hire’.
  15. Provides training, clinical support and supervision to CNMW’s, OB-GYN PA’s
  16. Responsible for training, educating, evaluating and working with the local hospital OB/Gyn Intern and Residency program participants as assigned.
  17. Performs procedures, deliveries, and surgeries at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
  18. Renders emergency care and treatment including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, starting IV fluids, and ordering of appropriate emergency medications. Sutures lacerations and addresses acute orthopedic injury with splinting if within provider’s scope of care.
  19. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the OB/GYN Staff Physician position.
  20. Reviews other providers’ notes as per the “Peer Review Policy” 
  21. Maintains all patient records to comply with required standards, reviews records regularly and obtains physician counter signatures where necessary.
  22. Manages time to preserve a patient-focused, team-based approach for rendering optimal health care.
  23. Attends all medical staff meetings and participates in the QI program.
  24. Attends all mandatory OSHA infection control seminars, and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including “Universal Precautions”.
  25. Abides by all infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak.
  26. Proficient in collaborating with patients using a team based approach to health care management.
  27. Performs other necessary duties as required to meet the goal of providing primary health care services. Receives & maintains local hospital credentialing & privileging approvals to manage all hospital level of care patients, including patients and any non-clinic as necessary based on hospital credentialing & privileging processes & hospital agreements.

Reporting Relationships:

The OB/GYN Staff Physician reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director of OB/GYN. The OB/GYN Staff Physician may also be asked to supervise PA, or CNMW and be included in the local hospital Physician Interns and Physician Residents Training Program.




Evaluation:

The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing, and will be carried out by the Director of OB/GYN. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually, but may be initiated at other times by the Director of OB/GYN.


Qualifications:
  1. Graduation from an accredited medical school with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy.
  2. Completion of an approved residency program in his/her medical specialty.
  3. License to practice medicine in the State of Virginia.
  4. The ability to relate with effectiveness to the patients and staff.
  5. Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques.
