Job Description

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) - Supported Independent Living

Oakland, California

A PMHNP Role Designed for Clinical Impact, Not Administrative Burnout

Are you a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) seeking a role where you can practice at the top of your license without being overwhelmed by administrative burdens and unmanageable caseloads? This is an opportunity to join a team that respects your clinical authority and is structured to prevent burnout, allowing you to focus on providing life-changing patient care.

Bonita House, Inc., a 50-year leader in Bay Area behavioral health, has an opening for a PMHNP in its Supported Independent Living (SIL) Program. The SIL program provides intensive outpatient mental health and case management services to adults with co-occurring serious mental illness and substance use disorders, utilizing the evidence-based Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT) model.

This is a flexible, full-time, benefits-eligible position (30+ hours/week) located at our program site on Jefferson Street in Oakland, CA.

The Bonita House Difference: A Focus on Sustainable, High-Quality Care

This role’s structure is a direct response to the challenges many clinicians face. We have built a system that allows you to thrive:
  • A Sustainable Caseload: You will manage a focused caseload of just 6 patients per day, ensuring you have the time and energy to provide thorough, personalized, and high-quality care.
  • No Client Sourcing or Intake: All referrals are managed exclusively through the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services ACCESS Program. Clients are pre-screened for eligibility, meaning you will work with a steady, pre-qualified caseload and can focus entirely on service delivery rather than administrative logistics.
  • True Interdisciplinary Collaboration: You will be a key clinical leader within a dynamic, cross-trained team that includes licensed clinicians (LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCCs), mental health rehabilitation specialists, and a licensed vocational nurse (LVN).

Your Impact as a PMHNP

In a collaborative partnership with an expert Medical Director, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric care to a diverse adult population. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and implementing personalized treatment plans that address dual-diagnosis needs.
  • Conducting psychiatric assessments and participating in crisis intervention efforts with the full support of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Providing individual therapy and coordinating medication support.
  • Engaging with external partners and the Alameda County ACCESS program to ensure seamless client care transitions.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive Pay: This position offers a highly competitive rate between $85 per hour and $90 per hour, depending on experience and fit.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: All full-time employees (30+ hours/week) are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Professional Growth: Access to training, supervision, and career development support within a supportive, mission-driven nonprofit recognized for innovation.

Qualifications
  • Current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of California.
  • National board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Current DEA registration.
  • A passion for working with dual-diagnosis clients in an integrated, team-based care setting.
